Connecting the Greenway

The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway is intended to be an unbroken pedestrian promenade extending from the Chinatown Park to the North End Parks.

But the walk is now broken by this chain link fence at the Parcel 12 ramps:

The Boston Museum proposes to build the Greenway Connector, a pedestrian bridge that will span the ramps and connect the Greenway.

Take a walk along the Greenway to see what we have in mind...

The walk begins in the Chinatown Park.

Big Dig Parcels 19, 21, and 22 near South Station were originally designated for development of indoor gardens by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, but the fate of this plan is uncertain.

Parcel 18, adjacent to Rowes Wharf, has been designated for the development of the New Center for Arts and Culture. The parcel has been extensively landscaped.

The Wharf District Parks include sculptures and fountains, and will soon feature a Harbor Park Pavilion.

Construction of the Armenian Heritage Park is scheduled to begin in 2009 on Parcel 13.

For the time being, the walk ends abruptly at this chain link fence at the edge of Parcel 12. The Boston Museum has proposed to build the Greenway Connector, a pedestrian bridge rising above the highway ramps to link the Wharf District Parks and Armenian Heritage Park to the south with the Boston Museum and the North End Parks to the north. As visitors walk on the Greenway Connector above the Parcel 12 ramps, they'll be enveloped by stories and visual imagery that introduce the programming in the Museum on Parcel 9. The connector's enclosure, fabricated out of visually permeable metal mesh, will be imbued with imagery related to local topographical and cultural history. The Greenway Connector will allow Boston to join the list of world cities with notable pedestrian bridges.
